Trails are multi-use. Ranger Trail travels over rolling hills, through forests and fields, crosses streams and passes near Lake Marburg. There are many views of the lake, including Ranger Overlook which has benches and hitching posts. Trailer parking lot is off of the Main Launch Day Use Area entrance road.

Horse trails are multi-use. Day-use trailer parking is available at the McMillian Woods lot. Additional parking is available at Artillery Ridge Campground off Taneytown Road and is adjacent to the park.  

Guided trail rides are also available at the National Riding Stables - call 717-334-5100 for reservations.

In the northeast section of the park is an area set aside for horseback riding. This area includes several miles of wide, mowed, interconnecting trails that wind through reverting farm fields, pine plantations and deciduous woodlands. There is a large, gravel parking area off of Alpine Road, a short distance south of the intersection with PA 177.

Flat Rock Trail System

Level of Difficulty: More difficult to most difficult.Some of the gravel or dirt roads and administrative roads are easiest.

Flat Rock Trail System - North of US 30
Big Flat Parking Area allows overnight camping. Free to stay,
however, a camping permit is required from the forest district office. Camping permits can also be obtained by emailing the district at fd01@pa.gov. Direct access to equestrian trails. Portable corrals are not allowed. Highlines can be used, provided that they have tree guards. Choose locations where the horse cannot reach trees when tied. Manure must be hauled away from the camping area and off state forest lands.

The trails are marked with a red blaze (2” x 6”) and shared
with hikers and non-motorized bicycles. Other trails that are
marked with yellow or orange blazes are only open to hiking.
Potable water is not available on state forest lands, however the
area has numerous springs and streams where horses can drink.

Parking is located off of Mt. Hope Road and is Day-Use Only. Trails are shared-use and blazed in red. Brown trail posts with white lettering are located at the trail intersections.  Parking area will accommodate approximately 4-6 trailers depending on size.

Shared Use Trail System - South of US 30

Teaberry and Peggy Hill Parking Areas serve as trailheads and both allow overnight camping. Swift Run Parking Area is a day use only trailhead. Free to stay, however, a camping permit is required from the forest district office. Camping permits can also be obtained by emailing the district at fd01@pa.gov. Direct access to equestrian trails. The trails of the park provide a beautiful setting for horseback riding, although it is prohibited at the overlooks and on Rhododendron Trail. Several shaded hitching rails for horses are located in the park to accommodate riding clubs and horse drawn wagons.

 

Swatara State Park

Horse Camping: No

Trails are multi-use. Except for Mifflin Trail, horses are permitted on all trails between Sand Siding Bridge and I-81/Pine Grove exit 100. Bear Hole Trail, Swatara Rail Trail and the 3.9 mile equestrian trail make a nice loop.

Additional equestrian parking is located on PA-443, 2.5 miles past Swopes Valley Road on the left.

Horse Trail Update:  October 2018 

The rail trail and horse trails have reopened. Bear Hole
Trail still has some work left before it will open to the public. The
trail from the equestrian lot to the rail trail has some washouts but is
passable, Please be aware and use caution. Contact the State Park
Office prior to arriving for additional updates.

Weiser State Forest

Haldeman Tract
Mud Run Equine Camping Area:
There are now 4 primitive camp sites specifically for horses at Weiser State Forest – Haldeman Tract.  All sites include high lines, picnic table and fire ring.  3 single sites (HE1, HE2 and HE4) and 1 double site (HE3) which includes 2 sets of high lines.  HE1 and HE3 are pull-thru sites. HE2 and HE4 are back-in camp sites.  There is also a common gathering area that offers 2 picnic tables and a fire ring.   The HE2 camp site offers an accessible picnic table. No water or restrooms, however there is a nearby restroom located at the Minnich Hit Picnic Area.  Manure must be hauled off of State Forest Land.  Camping is free, however, a permit is required.  Reservations can be made by completing an online application at www.dcnr.pa.gov and emailing the completed application to fd18@pa.gov or you may call 570-875-6450.  DCNR encourages you to make reservations 2 weeks prior to your stay.  Direct access to equestrian trails.  Day-Use parking is not permitted at the camp sites.

Camping is no longer permitted at the Rowland Lot, this parking area is for day-use only.  

New Horse Camp

Greenland Tract
Lukes Trail ends at Powells Valley Road. The shared use trail that continues into Game Lands is an unnamed trail that does connect to Greenland Road and can be utilized. All of the public use roads and drivable trails are open for equine use on the Greenland Tract. The 8 miles on State Game Lands 210 connect the Haldeman and Greenland Tracts.
